Grandma’s Recipes

While I was doing a little de cluttering this week I came
across this old salt box that I rescued
several years ago.

January 253-1

It makes the perfect recipe box!

January 081-1

I think it’s important to pass on recipes from our mother’s,  grandmother’s and Aunt’s.
These handwritten notes on scrapes of paper are pieces of history.

January 078-003
Please……if you’re still lucky enough to have relatives around
ask them about their favorite recipes and have them write
them down before they’re lost……
January 100

and especially pass them down to your children.  Grandparents are needed, and this is one way
to let them know how important they are.

January 253-1

I especially love and cherish these old recipes…..
they are like a living piece of history to me.

January 269-1

During the war and the great depression they only had pieces of paper to write
things down, if they were lucky.
No fancy recipes cards,  taste book or  pinterest.

January 253-1

Black Spice Cake
1 cup of butter or lard
2 cups of hot water
2 cups of sugar
1 cup of jam
l lb. raisins (or substitute)
1 tsp. cloves, cinnamon or any kind of spice
cook altogether 3 minutes
add 4 cups flour
2 tsps. of soda
Bake 1 hour (add any kind of nut meat)

What’s stopping you?  Make history….start writing.

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Have a good week and I will see you soon!

I love your post today. It brings warm thoughts about my grandmother. I have recipes that she has given me that are hand written, and I've kept them, always sentimentally looking at her handwriting as I've read the recipe. I agree, it's so important to have special recipes from loved ones. Great post!

Hi Mary: Just stopped by from A la carte blog. I see you love old dishes. I did a similar post once on the importance of writing recipes and I actually did a personal recipe book up for each of my 3 kids (all grown) and it was all hand-written. They loved it. Your blog is great. New follower here. Deb Ottawa, Canada

Love that salt box! I have lots of recipes from my MIL, but only a few from my mother. I do have a couple of her cookbooks with her notes, and a cookbook that belonged to my grandmother!

I love old recipes that are handed down to us from loved ones. I have some of my own - my mom's enchiladas to name one. You're right, these recipes are so precious to us. Your new Header is great. Your blog gets prettier and prettier every time I visit. Have a relaxing weekend, dear.
