Week 1: Venice

We’re back from our European adventure and what a grand adventure it was!   It doesn’t seem like we’ve been gone that long but I guess the old saying that time really does fly when you’re having fun is true!  What can I say…it was all good except a few more days in Venice would have made our trip perfect.

We took the water-bus….

Europe Trip 2011 010
This place was gorgeous!  I wanted to take picture’s of every building we passed.

Before arriving to Venice we read that our Star Hotel Splendid Venice was only a 5 minute walk from St Mark’s Square and that it could a little difficult to find.    We thought it would be a piece of cake…just grab our luggage and start walking.  After all we did have a GPS!   However,  after we turned on the GPS it kept asking us if we were walking.  Allies says, “ it’s confused by all the water and tall buildings!” It literally showed a giant beach ball rolling on the water!  So much for that idea…and I must have left the walking directions on the plane.

We walked down long narrow streets with shuttered windows, crossed over at least 5 bridges all the while merrily pulling and tugging our heavy luggage one step at a time over these little structures.  By the time we got to the  third and fourth bridge they all started to resemble small mountains.

We came upon dead end streets that backed up to water…. I think we’re lost!

Europe Trip 2011 040
Okay! We’ve got to stop looking at the laundry and start concentrating on our hotel…lost, lost!
Europe Trip 2011 049
I cannot tell a lie….this place is starting to look just like a labyrinth!

Europe Trip 2011 -lisa 015
Beautiful art, everywhere!

Gondola's!

Europe Trip 2011 -lisa 014
Traffic jam’s.
After finally finding our hotel, we fell exhausted on our beds. With very sleep for the last 24 hours and then throw in jet lag, I think we were DONE! We honestly didn’t wake up until ….the following day. We jumped up, took showers and scurried out the door to see more of Venice only to wind up getting lost AGAIN!

While exploring we found this lovely old Opera House.  Alise I agreed it would be fun to take in an Opera.

Europe Trip 2011 061
There was a giant glass chess game in the entry of the Opera House.

I must admit Opera isn’t one of my favorites but this performance was excellent.

Lovely cafe's….

Dreamy Desserts!

Europe Trip 2011 105
We took a gondola ride.  Our gondolier is rowing us along while we admired the very old architect and also learned some  history about the city.

Just when we started feeling confident about finding our way around it was time to leave.  It was sad to leave but we had a plane to catch for Rome!  Here’s a toast to you Venice for making my first tour in Europe a very memorable one!
grazie e buona
Thanks for stopping by and I hope I didn’t bore you too badly!   See you soon with pictures of Rome!

Mary, I love your home and your art! Do you know Carol of Our Sears Kit Home? They have a Sears Victorian?

Again, I'm so happy to meet you.
